Exhibition Contemporary Art — Jean-Baptiste Huynh, Remanence

from October 4, 2012 to December 31, 2012

Acknowledgments:
This exhibition was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Jerry Speyer.

With the support of JCDecaux and the Young Patrons Circle.

This exhibition upholds a Louvre tradition of artists from all periods drawing inspiration from the works on display to create new pieces. After touring all of the departments and visiting their exhibition rooms on a hunt for objects and paintings, Jean-Baptiste Huynh gradually selected the artworks that inspired him.

The full set of very large format prints (180 x 180 cm), shot using traditional film, gives an almost abstract reading of the various photo objects. These large formats make it possible to reproduce the light, materials and contours with precision, and provide a view that is at once pared-down and precise. Jean-Baptiste Huynh uses a black background in each image to isolate the subject from all context and refer back to the cosmos, a dimension that holds particular fascination for him.

The exhibition features echoes and discernable associations: a fragment of a Greek face and an evening sky, the glow of a candle and the transparency of a crystal skull, the enigmatic gaze of an ancient portrait and the brilliance of an Iranian ingot. The intentional way in which the artworks are displayed reinforces the specific visual world that the artist strove to create for this exhibition.

Organized by:

Pauline Guélaud, musée du Louvre.
