Exhibition I, Augustus, Emperor of Rome…

from March 19, 2014 to July 13, 2014

Acknowledgments:

Exhibition co-organised by Palaexpo, the Capitoline Museums, the RMN - Grand Palais, and the Musée du Louvre.

Marking the two thousandth anniversary of the death of Augustus (63 BC - 14 AD), this exhibition evokes the private history of the princeps, his dazzling career, and his exceptional political authority.

Augustus brought new impetus to the republican tradition, fostering a creative and cultural renaissance throughout the Roman world. New tastes shaped the form and decoration of public and private space in Rome and the provinces alike, leaving a legacy whose influence continues to be felt in Western culture today.

A selection of 350 works brings the figure of Augustus vividly to life, exploring the establishment of the imperial regime, and the artistic currents that characterized the Emperor's reign. Fragments of iconic monuments from Rome and the provinces, statues, carved reliefs, frescoes, even pieces of furniture, highlight the transformations at work in the urban landscape and the home. An exceptional collection of cameos and silverware testifies to the development of the sumptuary arts, serving the elite of the new regime.

Organized by:

Cécile Giroire and Daniel Roger, Musée du Louvre; Eugenio La Rocca and Annalisa Lo Monaco, Università degli Studi di Roma 'La Sapienza'; Claudio Parisi Presicce, Sovrintendente Capitolino ai Beni Culturali.
