The Winged Victory of Samothrace at the top of the Daru staircase Louvre Museum, Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities

Conservation treatment of the Winged Victory of Samothrace and its monumental staircase

The great project to conserve the Winged Victory of Samothrace and the Daru staircase where it is showcased will start on September 3, 2013. It will last over a year and a half and entail an exceptional spatial rearrangement; the Winged Victory will not be visible to the public from September 3, 2013 to Summer 2014. This major undertaking, with a budget of four million euros, has received the support of Nippon Television Holdings, F. Marc de Lacharrière (Fimalac) and Bank of America Merrill Lynch Art Conservation Project, with a contribution of three million euros. The Louvre Museum wishes to open the possibility for all to contribute to this ambitious project through the “Tous mécènes !” (All Donors!) campaign, in order to raise the remaining one million euros necessary to complete the project.

The Springtime of the Renaissance. Sculpture and the Arts in Florence, 1400-1460

Following upon major exhibitions devoted to masters of the High Renaissance—Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael—The Springtime of the Renaissance deals with the genesis of this major artistic and cultural movement, which first arose in Florence in the early years of the fifteenth century. Sculpture, an essential aspect of this rebirth, is the central focus of this exhibition. Some 140 works are presented, including several monumental ones, grouped into ten thematic sections. In addition to sculptures, the exhibition also features paintings, drawings, manuscripts, silver and gold pieces, and tin-glazed earthenware (majolicas).

Between land and sea. The extraordinary bestiary of the Roman mosaic of Lod

Remarkably conserved, this great mosaic was discovered in Lod in 1996 during the construction of a highway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. This unique pavement, decorating the floor of a house, presents abundant animal life inserted into geometric patterns. Presented in the majestic setting of the cour du Sphinx, in close proximity to the new spaces devoted to the Eastern Mediterranean Provinces of the Roman Empire, the Mosaic of Lod is exceptionally displayed at the Louvre Museum before returning to Lod and to the museum, currently under construction, that will house it.
