Clémence Isaure by Auguste PREAULT

Cast from a clay model as is shown by the marks left by the modeling tool on the back.
This bronze version is the only known sketch of the statue of Clémence Isaure, executed in marble in 1846 for the series of famous women in the Luxembourg gardens. Préault represents the probably mythical figure of Clémence Isaure, the founder of the Toulouse Flower Festival in the late medieval era, as a muse of poetry crowned with laurels. The medieval aspect is indicated by her headband. There are marked differences between the bronze and the final marble statue, particularly in the figure’s posture and the heavy bronze necklace, which becomes a cross on the statue. This work fills a gap in the museum’s sculpture collection, which has very few sketches and small bronzes from the 19th century and previously had only a few medallions and the plaster model of Silence to represent the great Romantic sculptor to whom the Musée d’Orsay has devoted a major exhibition.

Reception Pieces – Admission to the Royal Academy
Sculptors seeking admission to the French Royal Academy submitted works in plaster or clay for initial acceptance by a jury, and were then asked to execute a set piece (or "reception piece") in marble, within a specified time limit. Most of these reception pieces of are preserved in the Louvre.
