Italian painting
The Salon Carré (Square Salon) was built by Le Vau at the east end of the Grande Galerie after the fire of 1661. The Louvre's first public museum opened here in 1793, and for many years it housed exhibitions of contemporary art. The gallery now displays Italian paintings from the 12th to 15th centuries.
