Identification
Common name: Blackbird
Latin name: Turdus merula
Length: 25 cm
Distinguishing features: males are all black with a yellow beak and eye-ring; females are brown with spots and streaks on their breast.
Habitat: woodland and hedged countryside, parks and gardens in urban areas
Diet: insects, worms, berries and fruits
Status: Least Concern in the Ile-de-France region
Nesting period: from late February
Seen in the garden
Blackbirds mostly feed on the ground. They search for worms and small grubs in the lawns of the Grand Carré.
They also appreciate fruits and berries from trees and shrubs such as the wild cherry and guelder rose in the Bosquet des Oiseaux. If you hear noise in the plant beds, it is likely a blackbird foraging in the soil and foliage.
