Identification
Common name: Chaffinch
Latin name: Fringilla coelebs
Length: 15 cm
Distinguishing features: males have a blue-grey crown, rusty-red head-side and breast and grey-green rump; females are grey-green above with a faint brown tinge and greyish-white below with a grey-green rump.
Habitat: hedged and wooded countryside (including parks and gardens)
Diet: mainly seeds, occasionally fruits and insects
Status: Least Concern in the Ile-de-France region
Nesting period: March to June
Seen in the garden
This small passerine builds its nest in trees and hedges.
When a nest is present in a hedge, the gardeners delay pruning operations to preserve it.
