Distinguishing features: black and white plumage, very long tail accounting for half of its body length.
Habitat: open and semi-open country
Diet: omnivorous, opportunistic
Status: Least Concern in the Ile-de-France region
Nesting period: March to May
Seen in the garden
With its distinctive plumage, it is easy to recognise the Eurasian Magpie.
You can observe it on the lawns of the Grand Carré in the Tuileries Garden.
Magpies are in the same family as crows (corvids), but are less common in the garden.

The Eurasian Magpie is a species more frequently found in human-made environments than in other settings. Eurasian Magpies tend to do better in urban environments in France, given that they can be listed as ‘nuisance’ wildlife by individual French departments, and thus, trapped and killed without legal restriction in the concerned areas.
