Distinguishing features: males have grey-green upper parts, much yellow on wings and tail; females have duller and drabber plumage, less yellow on wings and tail.

This species has steeply declined in France, with its numbers dropping by more than half since 2001. Sometimes, this species ingests small pebbles to help grind the seeds it eats, as do most seed-eating birds.
